Problem:
The community is missing a quality light switch powered by esp32
Proposed behavior:
Act as a light switch with high quality hardware and customizable firmware.
Who benefits:
All the hackers out there flashing the ultra pros and other random switches.
Alternatives considered:
Zigbee or z-wave, typically more expensive/can’t write custom firmware on the device itself. (And therefore requires HA a potential failing point)
Let’s make a community driven device with awesome hardware, backed by esphome!

Thanks for sharing your thoughts, it’s a great topic for discussion. Hopefully others can chime in with their specific needs and use cases as well.
From my perspective, Zigbee and Z-Wave light switches tend to be more reliable and better suited for this kind of application compared to Wi-Fi-based options. That said, if ESPHome eventually gains official Zigbee support, that could open the door to building a really compelling solution around it.

Agreed!
There also potential for thread support which perhaps will open the door for this product to be mainstream and users first entry into esphome/home Assistant.

The rules I set for my smart home is to have the logic as close to the device as possible. Even if this doesn’t add any functionality over a standard switch it’s already a win because the logic will be on the device.
Obviously there is so much potential here that can be added. A modular design would be amazing.
